The vision behind the MARTIR series comes from editor-in-chief and creative director Marta Espinosa and touches upon her memories and childhood experiences growing up in Spain and the symbolism behind the Catholic religion. Established fashion and costume designer Jean-Paul Gaultier was hired to produce more than 1,000 unique costumes for the production. In 2014, Moschino released a ready-to-wear collection that included several McDonald’s-inspired looks (Fig. Right Arm (Tricky) was just that for the corrupt industrialist Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman). Another playful message is in Willis’s attire through the film - he is pretty much always wearing vests.

Many fans love to cosplay in Zorg's second outfit of choice when he decides to retrieve the stones himself. Blue Diva, the alien opera singer, is in a blue couture gown that’s worthy of the Met Gala red carpet. But what really makes this film stand out in cinematic history are its costumes that, a quarter-century on, are more relevant than ever.

Of course, The Fifth Element is popular with more than just the fashion design crowd—rarely does a comic convention pass by without at least one Leeloo/Dallas duo, even two decades later (Takingbacksam KidSkully). Csak a titokzatos ötödik elem mentheti meg a világot az ötezer évenként feltámadó Gonosz pusztításától.When Dallas attends the Diva’s performance on Fhloston Paradise, his choice to wear a traditional tuxedo is unquestioned, even as other characters present wear more futuristic and genderfluid ensembles. Once the headpiece is dry, you can then begin attaching the detailing (the head straps and the tentacles). The flame-tressed humanoid is tasked with saving the planet and has quite the wardrobe—all designed by Jean Paul Gaultier—to go along with it.

It’s not hard to see why; the film, then the most expensive non-US one ever made, was overly long, full of holes, and in need of, “fierce trimming”, as Roger Ebert noted at the time. Baby Ray (Ian Beckett) played a small role in the film when Korben (Bruce Willis) attends the Diva's (Maïwenn Le Besco) concert. Take half the length of your head's circumference and create a drawing of what you'd like the headpiece to look like on a piece of thin poster board.Gaultier's artistic vision made the film's main stars pop with color, exuberance and fit the mold of a futuristic sci-fi film to a T. The wide, reinforced necks are provocative and far beyond even the fashion of now - but they just about manage to not look like couture spacesuits. Just as Korben Dallas’s costuming draws on Bruce Willis’s look in Die Hard, Ruby Rhod’s costuming draws on another familiar persona. The Fifth Element is for all intents and purposes, the most iconic sci-fi film of them all – Sorry, Trekkies. Two aspects of Gaultier’s conception of 23 rd-century NYC fashion are particularly notable, the first being a general rejection of gender-specific fashion motifs.
