The prophecy was eventually fulfilled when Voldemort's Horcruxes were all destroyed, rendering Voldemort mortal and resulting in his final defeat and death at the hands of Harry Potter. [14] Interestingly, while Voldemort chose to mark Harry as his target due to their similarities, Neville Longbottom proved by standing up to Voldemort and destroying his last Horcrux, Nagini, that he was capable of being the other boy to meet the prophecy's requirements. Thus, both boys eventually played their part in the prophecy: Neville rendered Voldemort mortal by destroying his last Horcrux which allowed Harry to inflict the final defeating blow upon Voldemort. [14] In addition to Harry's love, the "power the Dark Lord knows not" could be Neville's courage (which enabled him to pull Gryffindor's sword out of the Sorting Hat to kill Nagini). It is unknown whether or not the Pensieve was used by later Headmasters, such as Professor Minerva McGonagall or her successor.

One important clue that everything wasn't just from Snape's point of view is that Sirius admitted the whole thing happened because he was "bored" that day and didn't want to study for O.W.L. exams. How could Snape even know that or hear any part of their conversation, since he wasn't sitting near the Marauders at all? And why would Snape hide a memory that painted James in the worst possible light? Didn't he always want Harry to know exactly what his father was like? Voldemort?" said Dumbledore, looking at Harry over the Pensieve. It was the characteristic, piercing look Dumbledore had given him on other occasions, and always made Harry feel as though Dumbledore were seeing right through him in a way that even Moody's magical eye could not. Crouch's appearance suggests that Karkaroff's trial took place before that of Barty Crouch junior and the Lestranges. On a more trivial note, the elder Crouch as a young man had dark hair, whereas his son was blond. Harry did not use any specific incantation, and did not in fact have any idea at this point what the Pensieve was or what it could do, so it seems somewhat unlikely that the selection of memories that appear in the Pensieve have anything to do with a conscious or even unconscious command of Harry's. Judging from Dumbledore's demonstration later on, he had been examining these specific memories just before Fudge's arrival. The 'pensieve' is a homonym of 'pensive', which means deep/ serious thought; it is also a pun, as it acts as a sieve of thought ( pensée in French). [1] Behind the scenes [ ]In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Severus Snape's memories take the form of tears. As such, Snape specifically instructs Harry to put them in the Pensieve, something he does not do in the book, since Harry is familiar with the wispy form of thoughts. So the wizarding world's criminal justice system includes the concept of plea-bargaining, something confirmed later ( OP27) by Willy Widdershins having been allowed to talk his way out of punishment for his Muggle-baiting activities. Dolohov, as stated in the Daily Prophet in OP25, was convicted of the brutal murders of Gideon and Fabian Prewett, for which he received a life sentence in Azkaban. According to Mad-Eye Moody in OP9, four other Death Eaters participated in the murder, but their names had not been given as of the end of OP. Rosier is dead," said Crouch. "He was caught shortly after you were too. He preferred to fight rather than come quietly and was killed in the struggle."

Note that no mention is made of any witch or wizard present speaking an incantation or otherwise doing anything to make this happen. From Bagman's hearing later in this chapter, and Harry's experiences during his own disciplinary hearing - less than three months after his experience with the Pensieve - we know that the chair does not automatically bind everyone who sits in it. As we are to learn shortly, this is a memory of Dumbledore's, who is present on one of the benches lining the room. It is worth noting that Harry's initial entry into the memory is from a viewpoint and an angle that Dumbledore himself couldn't have seen.Fudge's hypocrisy becomes apparent later on. Right now, Harry is enjoying a high approval rating in the press, so Fudge has time for him. After Rita's hatchet job just before the Third Task, though, Fudge won't even meet Harry's eyes. Since courtroom ten is located in the heart of London, this means that the Dementors accompanying Karkaroff had to be brought into a Muggle city. From OP8 and OP35, however, we know that the Ministry has a large and active Floo connection, and that Portkeys work on the premises. It seems unlikely that Azkaban would have a Floo connection, but a Portkey might explain how Karkaroff and his jailers were brought to London.

A: It's reality. It's important that I have got that across, because Slughorn gave Dumbledore this pathetic cut-and-paste memory. He didn't want to give the real thing, and he very obviously patched it up and cobbled it together. So, what you remember is accurate in the Pensieve. A rather poignant observation, in light of what Harry is to learn from Dumbledore a year later ( OP37): that Dumbledore knew, from the moment he left Harry on the Dursleys' doorstep, what sort of a life Harry was being condemned to lead for the next ten years. The obvious reason for Dumbledore to ask this question at this point is that he is following the line of thought Harry is shown pursuing. A more sinister reason, as will be demonstrated the following Christmas ( OP21), might be that Dumbledore wished to learn whether Harry was seeing through Voldemort's eyes. Given Moody's distinction even among fellow Aurors, the fact that he spent six months pursuing a single Death Eater seems significant. It would be particularly interesting to know if this was an official assignment by the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and whether Moody was dedicated to working only on this one case for that length of time.An empty chair stood in the very center of the room. There was something about the chair that gave Harry an ominous feeling.

In unison, the witches and wizards along the right-hand side of the dungeon raised their hands. The crowd around the walls began to clap as it had for Bagman, their faces full of savage triumph. The boy began to scream. Alone in Dumbledore's office, Harry notices a shimmering light. Inside a partially opened cupboard is a stone bowl filled with an odd, glittering, substance. Peering into it, he sees a torch-lit stone room, filled with tiny witches and wizards. He moves closer for a better view and is catapulted into the scene. Nobody in the room notices him, and Harry, seeing that apparently younger versions of Dumbledore and Moody are present, realizes he is inside a memory, and settles down to watch. This is the first appearance of the Pensieve. Professor Snape will store memories in it as a precaution in the next book, starting with the first Occlumency lesson, and continuing until Harry experiences that memory by examining the Pensieve when Snape has left the room. Professor Dumbledore and Harry will use it repeatedly in the sixth book to examine memories that Dumbledore has retrieved, and Harry will use it in the final book to view Snape's autobiography. Albus Dumbledore: " The thing that smashed was merely the record of the prophecy kept by the Department of Mysteries. But the prophecy was made to somebody, and that person has the means of recalling it perfectly." Harry Potter: " Who heard it?" Albus Dumbledore: " I did. On a cold, wet night sixteen years ago, in a room above the bar at the Hog's Head Inn. I had gone there to see an applicant for the post of Divination teacher...." — Albus Dumbledore recalling the night the prophecy was made [src] He looked down into it expecting to see the stone bottom of the basin - and saw instead an enormous room below the surface of the mysterious substance, a room into which he seemed to be looking through a circular window in the ceiling.

Again the memory fades and reappears, only now the room is grimmer. A witch and three wizards are chained before Mr. Crouch, accused of torturing the Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom to uncover Voldemort's whereabouts. The Wizengamot unanimously sentence them to life in Azkaban. The boy, Barty Crouch, Jr., pleads for his father to spare him; Crouch, stony-faced, disowns his son while Mrs. Crouch, weeping, watches as Barty is condemned. James once publicly humiliated him, even threatening to remove his trousers. This resulted in Lily Evans (Harry's future mother) defending teenage Snape, as the two were friends. Snape then said he did not need help, calling Lily a " mudblood", a derogatory term for muggle-borns. This caused Lily to get very agitated, which led to a fall out between the two. This would later proved to be Snape's worst mistake. [12] They were the following: it was a boy, he is born in the closing days of July of 1980 (the year that the prophecy was made), his parents had defied Voldemort three times and lived to tell about it, he would have a power that Voldemort was unable or unwilling to comprehend, and if more than one person was born that met the requirements, Voldemort himself would choose to whom it would ultimately refer. [3] Pensieves are very rare and powerful magical items. They are intensely personal as well, since memories often hold recollections of things one would wish to hide or forget. The Pensieve of a powerful witch or wizard is typically buried with them when they die. However, the Hogwarts Pensieve does not belong to a particular person but to the school. It contains centuries of magical memories left behind by previous Heads and serves as a magical reference source. The Headmaster or Headmistress literally has access to the wisdom of the ages.
