The giraffe's stature can be a disadvantage as well—it is difficult and dangerous for a giraffe to drink at a water hole. To do so they must spread their legs and bend down in an awkward position that makes them vulnerable to predators like Africa's big cats. Giraffes only need to drink once every several days; they get most of their water from the luscious plants they eat. Their tongue and teeth are well-suited for their diet. Their tongue is long and tough, allowing them to strip leaves from limbs easily. Their tough tongue also allows them to strip the leaves from stems and branches that have thorns. The Rothschild’s incisors are splayed. This unique shape makes it easier for them to strip the leaves they want to eat from the branches. In the Silly Symphonies short, "Elmer Elephant", the titular character befriends Joe Giraffe, an elderly giraffe who wears several collars. The elderly giraffe empathizes with Elmer for being teased by the other animals, as they used to tease him as well. He and the pelicans also assist Elmer in putting out a fire that breaks out at Tillie Tiger's house.

While no two individuals have exactly the same pattern, giraffes from the same area appear similar.

This same giraffe was then photographed in December 2016 and again in March 2017 (Figure 2B). Dr Brown and his team named him ‘Gimli’ in honor of the heroic dwarf in JRR Tolkien’s classic tale, The Lord of The Rings. They estimated that Gimli was a juvenile or subadult that was at least 15 months old in March 2017.
