Occupation: Student of Ginger’s at Buffalo Lake State; also studies Arabic with Ginger’s girlfriend Samia Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Cynthia, Jasmine, Janis and Stuart (ironically, one of the strip's few straight males). None of these characters are particularly disliked, but fans have lamented that they miss the older characters like Sparrow and Lois. This long-running Slice of Life series by Alison Bechdel about the lives, loves, and politics of a group of lesbians in an unspecified midwestern town is one of the most popular of all LGBT comic strips. Originally introduced as a series of one-shot vignettes in 1983, the strip shortly moved to its serialized format with recurring characters. After writing the strip for more than 25 years, Bechdel put it on hiatus in 2008 to concentrate on her graphic memoirs Fun Home and Are You My Mother? The comic strip began to make a return in 2016, and has updated sporadically since. Mistaken for Cheating: One arc centers around Mo and Sydney being told separately by friends that they think their partner is cheating on them. It eventually turns out that both of them were consensually engaging in roleplay with each other over online voice chat, but their friends overheard and misunderstood, causing them both to think there was a third party involved. ALISON BECHDEL: You know, I am returning to them in a funny way. Right now, I'm working on another project where-- not a memoir, but a sort of auto-fictional story about my life where those characters are my actual friends.

Strawman Political: In the character of Cynthia, one of Ginger's students, who began as a one-note right-wing conservative gadfly. Over the course of her Character Development she comes out as a lesbian, becomes conflicted about her upbringing, and is gingerly welcomed into the main characters' circle, but does not drop her conservative beliefs. Sydney: Stuart? D'you really want to apply that solar model to human behavior? After all, darkness triumphs over the light in June. Unless you mean that war is inevitable, a kind of cyclical, Bataillean squandering of excess energy — a view with which I'm inclined to agree. (everybody glares at her) I'm just saying. As I listened to this new take on classic queer characters, I found myself laughing, tearing up, and even getting chills at the emotional depth of the performances. Dykes to Watch Out For is a must-listen for anyone interested queer history, found family, and lesbian culture. Did you know? Sartorial Catch-22: Calibrating her fashion compass is difficult with a teenage daughter who constantly steals her Paul Frank pajamas but also begs daily for a rhinestone-studded Ashlee Simpson halter top.

Ever since I came out to her about Stuart she thinks it means I’m straight. She can’t understand that I’m a bisexual lesbian! Occupation: Worrier and kvetch extraordinaire, with a job at now-defunct Madwimmin Books on the side. Mo has since graduated from library school. Unchanging truth: A rhetorical, if not action-based, dedication to social justice combined with red and white striped shirts.Meaningful Name: A few minor characters have meaningful names of varying levels of obscurity. Harriet's girlfriend after Mo, for whom Mo entertains a major hate-on and who later cheats on Harriet, is called Ellen Tufel, "Teufel" being German for "devil" (at one point Mo calls her "that she-devil"). Toni and Clarice had hoped to have their adoption case heard by sympathetic Judge Fairchild, but are instead heard by strict, conservative Judge Booker. Sydney's oncologist, whom Mo finds rather militaristic, is Dr. Rommel. And the creepy joined-at-the-hip perfect couple are named Liz and Beth - complete with daughter Elspeth. Also, Sydney's long-standing bit-on-the-side is a Comp. Lit. professor named Madeleine Zeugma. A zeugma is a figure of speech. AB: It's so exciting, Anthony, because, you know, I wrote that comic strip alone in my basement for decades. And I would always imagine, “Wow, I wish I could have a sound effect here, or some music here” and now with this Audible version, it's all come to life: there's voices and sound effects and music and it just really brings this other dimension to this work, which is just magical. Ginger Jordan, a struggling academic and English professor at Buffalo Lake State University, whose star student Cynthia was interning at the CIA despite coming out to her parents. Longtime housemate of Lois and Sparrow, Ginger eventually bought a house with Samia, a Syrian Muslim chemist in a lavender marriage to a man.

Before lesbian TikTok, before The L Word, before Ellen, there was Dykes to Watch Out For, Alison Bechdel’s seminal comic-strip sensation about the lives and loves of one tight-knit dyke community that was a fixture in gay papers across America for 25 years. On Her Nightstand: Pamphlets for various puberty-delaying hormone courses, subtly planted by Janis Carlos It Runs in the Family: Clarice visits her parents to tell them of Toni's pregnancy, only to be upstaged when her brother, Clarence, pipes in "It's OK, Mama. I'm gay, too." As I listened to this new take on classic queer characters, I found myself laughing, tearing up, and even getting chills at the emotional depth of the performances.ALISON BECHDEL: Dykes to Watch Out For was a sort of soap opera kind of strip in gay and lesbian newspapers, and it centered around a women's bookstore where many of the characters worked. And we followed their lives and loves. But, at the same time, we followed current events as they were unfolding and the characters were responding to things going on in the news and politics. Settle in to this wittily illustrated soap opera (Bechdel calls it “half op-ed column and half endless serialized Victorian novel”) of the lives, loves, and politics of a cast of characters, most of them lesbian, living in a midsize American city that may or may not be Minneapolis. Something To Speculate On: The particular form her rebellion will take after years of home-schooling with her ecologically-minded leftist dad: Will it involve cussing, littering and shopping at Wal-Mart, or merely a membership with Concerned Women for America? Jasmine And, to me, that was all that my comic strip was about. It was like I was showing the lives of people like me and my friends to people like me and my friends. It never occurred to me that it would go further than that. Maybe I had a dim little hope of that, but it was not part of my agenda. I just wanted to help people like me to see themselves as whole human beings, citizens, members of the community.
