Description

Having read all the books in the series previously, I was already familiar with the lives of Torak, Renn and Wolf but this adventure was brought to the next level. Candle Cove has haunted Janice ever since she returned to the real world, and though she has tried to move on it still leaves its mark. Ongoing nightmares, being treated as crazy and the endless struggle to repair her relationship with her older sister, Melrose.

Skin Taker by Michelle Paver (9781789542417/Hardback

Torak has survived the summer and his heart-stopping adventure in the Seal Islands. He and Wolf are together again. But their reunion is all too short-lived.

The story itself is sound, do I do think it's missing something that the previous books did have. I only can't quite figure out what that is. I do know, however, that I think it's a bit cheap - if that's the right word - of partially re-using some ideas that were present in Book 5 - Oathbreaker. The Deep Forest, how the clans there act, the idea of war, Gaup's presence... Okay, it may be realistic, and the way she writes it and everything certainly is realistic as well, but it just looks as if she's written the same book twice with some changes. The two bases of the book - the meteorite and Naiginn - are good, though.

In Skin Taker, the clans are waiting for Sunwake after the long days of winter, but disaster strikes as a phenomenon they call the Thunderstar, something that I think we would call a meteor, strikes the heart of the forest killing The First Tree. Torak and Renn need to travel north to the deep forest to try and save the First Tree and their forest home, but a new leader has come to power in the North. He is intent on creating further division in the clans between “The Chosen Ones” safe in the surviving forests of the north and the decimated southern clans His cape gets longer and longer during the series. At one point, after Janice's actress changes, it gets almost twice as long, which is the most noticeable time when this occurs.Of course, in the original creepypasta, Candle Cove was revealed to be of dubious existence given how everyone who remembered it was actually watching static. However, this greatly emphasizes The Skin Taker's sinister qualities, as well as the rest of the show. Paver has done it again. Every time, I just get more and more impressed by her creations. The only parts that upset me with this novel in particular were some cringey and cliché dialogue stints, but they didn’t bother me enough to cause harm to the integrity of the novel as a whole.

The Skin-Taker | Candle Cove Wiki | Fandom

Little is known about Mike's estranged wife and daughter in the first part of Candle Cove. At the end of the third episode, Mike's daughter Lily mysteriously arrives in Iron Hill – even though she lives over 400 miles away. In the fourth episode, Mike takes Eddie's skeletal remains from the morgue. With Jessica's help, he burns what is left of his brother.Great question. The joys include being reunited with Torak, Renn and Wolf – as well as other favourite characters such as Fin-Kedinn, Dark and the Walker. I also love evoking the Forest, the Sea, and all the many creatures whom my characters encounter in their adventures, as well as introducing the reader to new clans. The challenges include how to keep each new story vivid and exciting, without repeating what has gone before – AND how to ensure that each new story appeals both to fans of the series, and to readers who are new to the WOLF BROTHER books, and want a standalone story. The book begins with some deviations from the usual formula, introducing new conflicts and unknown characters. However, it soon falls into the familiar pattern established in previous books, taking readers on a captivating journey. Unlike previous installments, the tension between Renn and Torak is replaced by conflicts with unfamiliar characters who haven't proven themselves worthy of trust. I've mentioned before that Paver helps to ignite a love and passion for the natural world (from my child and adult reading experiences), and that is another reason I can only recommend it. They change from time to time, but here are the ones that have lasted. For heroes, it’s Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings and Hector from The Iliad. For villains, it’s Dracula (the Bram Stoker one, of course), and Stavrogin from The Devils. Fascinating insights into the characters' understanding of the world they live in. The story is one of adventure, mystery and suspense

Theories abound about The Skin Taker, another gruesome monster who haunts Iron Hill, both as a character in Candle Cove and as a physical creature wandering around town. The Skin Taker, as its name makes clear, takes the flesh of anyone who gets in his way. I scribble the first version of each chapter on a pad with a rollerball pen, but it’s such a scrawl that I can only read it while it’s still fresh in my mind, so I try to type it onto the wordprocessor on the same day. Then I go over it a few times on the computer before moving on to the next chapter, and so on. Read a Q&A with Michelle Paver about Viper's Daughter, as she returned to the Wolf Brother series after over a decade. Meticulously researched, atmospheric [...] and relentless, this instalment deservedly introduces Paver to a new generation of readers' Guardian Skin Taker" seamlessly continues the narrative from its predecessor, "Viper's Daughter," providing a tightly woven plot that will engage fans of the series. It is important to note that the book is best appreciated when read in the context of the previous installments, as it builds upon the established world and characters.

Reviews

Michelle Paver writes her stories, by making them so gripping and hard to put down. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes to read an exciting fantasy fiction book with demons, He is known to be present in six episodes, but he may have been in more of the ones that were unaired. His scenes are generally lengthy and considered frightening. His signature songs, "Come, Come, Rip" and "One Year Closer", contain some ambiguous and dark themes. (Although the latter very obviously speaks of Janice being closer to death, and thus closer to becoming another victim.) Can easily be read as a standalone novel, so skilful is the storytelling... Paver powerfully presents a world view that's magical but never primitive' Financial Times The front cover design by John Fordham Design and the interior illustrations by Geoff Taylor are captivating and gorgeous! Can you remember how you felt when you saw them for the first time? What do you feel they add to the story?
