Description

There’s a mystery surrounding who really ‘invented’ the original Hostess CupCake in 1919, however, the man responsible for the seven-looped curlicue – which was added more than 30 years later – was DR ‘Doc’ Rice. This has caused consternation for some, who continue to swear the cake is different. In actuality, it is the chocolate that makes the difference. Due to the chocolate coating, the cake tends to stay more moist, leading to the slightly different texture when compared to a normal Twinkie. [ citation needed]

There has been debate over whether a Chocodile is a chocolate-covered Twinkie. The debate arose from the seeming "texture difference" between the Twinkie and the Chocodile. During a taste test and debate in Vacaville, California, opinions were split among those taking the test as to whether the taste of the cake was the same. This issue was resolved during an episode of "Unwrapped"—a Food Network television show—where it was confirmed by a Hostess employee named Jim Duffy that the Chocodile was, in fact, a chocolate-covered Twinkie. [1] If you would rather do a normal layer cake bake according to boxed cake mix directions in three eight inch cake pans. Step 2. Make cake batter as directed on box mix. Step 3. Bake cake mix in the oven according to directions in two layers for only 20 minutes.Growing up, every day we got a treat in our lunchbox. Sometimes it was Swiss Cake Rolls, sometimes it was Hostess Cupcakes, and sometimes it was Twinkies! I think Twinkies are pretty much synonymous with childhood nostalgia, am I right?! Using a mixer, cream the butter, shortening, salt and vanilla until smooth. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed. I could have used a little assistance when I flipped the second pan over onto the first! I just skooched (the official word) the layers around until they looked presentable! The chocolate frosting covers a multitude of sins (lol mistakes!) Step 7. Add remaining cream cheese mixture to top of cake. Step 8. Refrigerate for 20 minutes or until set. Step 9. Microwave frosting for 25 seconds. Stir and pour over top of cake. I do own a stand mixer but it’s certainly possible to use a hand mixer if that’s all you’ve got. Step 5. Allow layers to cool then add half of the cream cheese mixture to top of one layer.

To Make the Batter: In the bowl of a standing mixer, beat together the eggs and salt for 2 minutes. Add the sugar and continue beating for 13 more minutes until the eggs are bright white and soft peaks form. In a separate large bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder. Fold half of the flour mixture into the whipped egg mixture. Add the butter, then add remaining flour mixture. Mix until smooth batter forms. Portion out the batter into the twinkie pan, filling each about 2/3 of the way.
