The close-focus point is at 24cm from the sensor plane and the maximum magnification is 0.16x when the lens is set to 24mm. This means you have to be extra careful when using the lens in extreme conditions, especially when it is very humid. When shooting in very rainy conditions in New Zealand, the front element of my lens fogged up a little. I put it away and let it dry up, and the moisture disappeared. So keep this in mind when shooting in the field – you might end up permanently damaging the lens.

I do find it strange that a lens that’s great for shooting in the outdoors is not fully weather-sealed – perhaps in late 2013, Fuji hadn’t perfected that tech yet. The problem with seeking a one lens solution for anything is it will always be a compromise at one end of the FL range, or the other. I have been blessed with a good copy of the 18-55, and that has pretty much assigned to my X-E3 as a general purpose zoom. However, on my X-T3 my daily, general purpose lens is the 16-55/2.8 It works for most situations including landscapes. If I want wider than 16mm I go to my 14/2.8. Perhaps one of these days I might buy the Zeiss Touit 12/2.8.Above left: Fuji XF 16mm f1.4 at f8, above right: Fuji XF 10-24mm at 16mm f8. 100% crops from centre of JPEGs

This is a better-than-average lens for today, being mostly metal with a wonderful front metal filter thread and hood mount — but the rear mount oddly is cheap aluminum. If you are a travel photographer you cannot go wrong with the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR especially if you consider pairing it with one of the faster prime lenses for the occasional low light shooting or when you desire a shallow depth of field in your images. Bokeh, the feel, character or quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to how far out of focus they are, is neutral at 10mm where you'll never see it, but ugly at 24mm where you're more likely to see it — but I doubt you will. This lens is a solid 8 for me. I love Fuji's lenses, and have used most of them. The fit and finish of them is usually outstanding, and the optical quality of their lenses is consistently very good, and sometimes outstanding. I would say this is not their best effort, but that doesn't mean it's a not a worthy offering. Good, useful zoom range combined with a fixed aperture, and ooooh that 10mm wide angle. You can definitely get some expansive shots with this lens. It's not the widest I've used (14mm equiv would be), but close enough and wide enough to really make some astounding images. The scalloped hood that ships with the XF 10-24mm F4 OIS is quite large and splays out pretty wide. It’s nowhere near as obnoxious as the hood that comes with the XF 23mm F1.4. It reverses well too. My favourite Fuji X-Mount hoods are still the XF 35mm F/1.4 and XF 18mm F2. They just look cool to me, fiddly cap and all. The XF 23mm F1.4 now has a metal LH-XF23 accessory hood.→ I really like similar add-on hood for the XF 16mm F1.4 WR, but on the copy I got the the XF 23mm F1.4, the cap does not stay on solidly. The aperture ring free-spins with no stops at the end nor does it have the usual aperture markings – this ring feels lower quality than the rest of the body parts.
